Louisville defeats Kentucky 80-77

While Kenucky gave it their all against their in state rivals, they went an embarrassing 11-23 from the line as the young Wildcats dropped a hard fought loss to the #4 Cardinals,  80-77.

Kentucky was down 8 at the half, and 17 late in the second half when Coach Cal finally got tired of the one sided calling and was handed a technical foul.  Kentucky responded by going on 8-0 run, cutting the lead to nine, and then to 2 with 5 minutes remaining behind four three pointers from Kentucky Sophomore Kyle Wiltjer.  But poor free throw shooting, including six straight misses from Kentucky center Willie Stein late in the second half, proved too much to over come.

With the exception of turnovers and horrible free throw shooting, the Cats played better than expected against the #3 Cardinals.  The intensity level was much higher and the Cats played aggressive and with confidence. And, as usual...and as expected...the officials were not friendly to Kentucky.  It wasn't until Coach Cal got a much needed "T" in the second half that the game started to be called a little more evenly, and the Cats went on a much needed run to be in a position to win the game.

Freshman Archie Goodwin continues to play volatile basketball with drives to the basket that resemble John Wall, but also making bad decisions concerning shot selections and multiple turnovers.  Also, Freshman Alex Polythress is still not playing as aggressive as Kentucky fans would like to see.  This team has all the potential of last years national champions..but a lack of leadership and inconsistent play on the court could continue to make for a long year.  With SEC play just around the corner, Coach Cal needs to continue to push these young wildcats to play aggressive basketball.
